First Deer of the Season

Although the 2019-20 white-tailed season is one third over, opening day was day to remember for a veteran hunter from Brownsville.
At about 6:30 a.m. this past Nov. 2, Ruben Pizana went into his blind and an hour later he saw two bucks coming out of the brush across from his stand.
He then took a shot at the biggest one and bagged an eight-pointer weighing more than 200 pounds.
Although the buck was not Pizana’s biggest one, it was the first one that he has taken on a season’s first day in his many years of hunting.
”I have been hunting since I was 18,” said the fifty year old certified mechanic.
“This was a first one for me.”
Pizana said he could have waited for the rut but since a windfarm surveying crew has been working at the ranch where he hunts near Chihuahua, a small town in Zapata County, he decided against it.
“We might not be able to hunt during the rut,” he said. “but I took my chances and got me a nice buck.”
Pizana said he will hunt till the end of the regular season, which will wrap up on Jan. 19 in South Texas.
After that, the late season for does and spikes will go from Jan.20 through Feb. 2.
