The La Feria City Commission held its last regularly scheduled meeting at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 11 at the La Feria City Commission Meeting Room at 115 E. Commercial Ave. in La Feria.
With no citizens in attendance, the commission heard no public comments that evening immediately after the invocation, pledge and quorum.
There were no announcements and the commission went on to address agenda items at a rapid pace. Minutes for the Jan. 28 meeting were approved.
Afterward the commission approved a revised ordinance ordering the general election to be held May 2. This election cycle, Places 3, 4 and 5 are up for election. Those places are presently held by Donato Garcia, Julian Guevara, and Esmeralda Lozano, respectively.
The commission then went on to approve a renewal of the city’s membership in the Lower Rio Grande Valley Development Council. The LRGVDC is a voluntary association of local governments formed under Texas Law in 1967 as one of Texas’ 24 regional Council of Governments (COG’s) serving Cameron, Hidalgo and Willacy County.
The LRGVDC promotes cooperation among local units of government and provides forums and opportunities for them to work with economic interests and citizen groups in order to improve the region’s health, safety, and general welfare as well as plan for future development.
The membership renewal was unanimously approved.
The commission then entered into closed session where members received legal counsel for three separate items including a complaint from the Department of Wage and Hour, the disannexation of a specific property on Mile 8 North Road, and the city’s legal rights and obligations in regulation and governance of gaming establishments.
The next meeting of the La Feria City Commission is scheduled for 6:30 p..m on Tuesday, Feb. 25. The public is encouraged to attend. An agenda for the meeting can be downloaded from the city’s website at www.cityoflaferia.com.
