School Board reviews performance goals

By NELDA BRIONES / LFN

On Monday, Feb. 10, the La Feria ISD School Board met for its monthly meeting and one item on the agenda of particular interest was the approval of the superintendent performance goals for 2020. There are 5 goals in all.

Goal 1 is focused on addressing continued improvement in academics. For the past two years on the school’s academic performance report, the school has maintained a “B” accountability rating. This past school year the district improved from a score of 83 to a score of 87. The upcoming goal is to continue improving in an effort to move up to an “A” rating.

Goal 2 focuses on the finances and budget of the district. The goal of the district is to maintain a balanced budget while still providing resources needed for students and staff, upgrading facilities, and providing yearly raises for staff.

Goal 3 focuses on supporting college career and readiness. Last year the school was awarded a Gear Up grant for the 7th-grade class cohort, which is now in 8th grade. The program will follow them up all through high school.

The grant supports efforts to increase the number of low-income students who are prepared to enter and succeed in post-secondary education.

The district along with the help of Lone Star National Bank also started a college savings program for elementary students. First graders were given banks in order to save up enough money to open a savings account that will help them with college. There are also evening financial literacy classes that help parents learn how to financially prepare for their kids’ college education.

Goal 4 focuses on providing a safe and secure environment for students and staff. A Student Health Advisory Council (SHAC), which is made up of teachers, nurses and parents, meets throughout the year to discuss topics needed to educate students and the community about health and wellness.

The district will be hosting a Health and Wellness fair that will include free health screenings. The event will take place on Feb. 27th from 5 to 7 p.m. at the high school gym.

Finally, Goal 5 focuses on increasing opportunities to work collaboratively with the community. The district has joined the “It’s Time Texas Community Challenge” this year. The goal of this challenge is to transform the community’s health. Those interested in joining the district in the challenge can register at ittcommunitychallenge.com.
