The 2020 softball season has not officially begun but La Feria senior Eneli Garza already has her playing future all figured out.
Garza took her first step to the next level by signing her offer letter of intent to join Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio during a ceremony on Jan. 30 at the La Feria High School library.
The senior shortstop said the decision to join OLLU was an easy one, citing location and comfort as what ultimately sold her.
“Personally, it’s the best fit for me because it’s three hours away and close to home,” she said. “The team and coach are amazing. The team is loving, caring and the campus even feels like home.”
Garza had a strong junior year for the Lionettes, racking up 42 hits, 51 runs scored, 23 RBIs and recorded a .525 batting average on her way to an All-District 32-4A second-team selection.
Garza is hoping to contribute right away at OLLU, which plays in the NAIA’s Red River Athletic Conference.
“I feel like I can bring a little bit of everything,” she said “I’ll always try my hardest to earn a spot. If there isn’t a spot or any opportunity, I just want to compete to get on the field or just cheer for my team.”
Garza still has a senior season ahead of her, but she can take solace knowing that her playing future is secured.
“To know it’s out of the way is good,” she said. “Now I just want to try and better myself in practice and help my team out and encourage them.”
