Veterans Memorial Committee seeks support

La Feria has one of the best memorials built to honor those who have served or still are serving our country.
A group of devoted citizens has been working on improving it for a number of years and has really ramped up efforts in the last three years. But doing so takes time and money, requiring three phases before it’s finally completed. Phases 1 and 2 are finished while the last is now in the works.
On Feb. 15 at the Fiesta de la Feria, several members of the Veterans Memorial Committee set up a booth to raffle several items donated by residents in order to collect money for Phase 3.
John Hernandez said the phase calls for constructing a sidewalk, and buying and installing about 20 benches around the monument.
“We are a very small group made up of about a dozen volunteers,” he said.
“We need about $3,000 to complete this phase.”
Committee member Eric Loya said that in addition to the booth that was set up during the annual Fiesta de La Feria, the group holds a number of fundraisers around the area.
The next one will be held Saturday, March 7 at the Golden Corral parking lot at 521 W. Tyler Ave. in Harlingen. Anyone willing to help out is encouraged to stop by the booth and grab a barbecue chicken plate and the usual sides for $7. The committee would appreciate the public’s support for such a worthy cause.
