LA FERIA – A team of leaders from La Feria ISD attended the Mexican American School Boards Association (MASBA) conference on Feb. 20-23 in San Antonio. This year was the 50th anniversary of the MASBA and La Feria ISD school board members and administrators were proud to present on the importance of family and community engagement to help students succeed in school.
La Feria ISD has implemented new practices in the district such as financial literacy classes and nutrition classes for families. The district also began giving back to the community by opening Lexi’s Closet and Leon’s Pantry.
Back in the 1970’s, Edgewood ISD Superintendent Dr. Jose A. Cardenas conceived the idea of the Mexican American School Board members Association. He knew that a substantial part of the Texas population was Mexican American and were poorly represented on local school boards.
The organization was officially incorporated on Dec. 6, 1973. Throughout the years MASBA has tackled tough issues of equity and diversity, appropriate curriculum and advancement of the Mexican American culture. In addition, MASBA has made a commitment to providing scholarships to graduating seniors in every single member district.
