Santa Rosa ISD considers graduation ceremony contingency plans

SANTA ROSA – With the remainder of the 2019-20 school year officially cancelled, Santa Rosa ISD is looking for a way to ensure that the Class of 2020 still receives the recognition it deserves.
Santa Rosa ISD Superintendent Angela Gonzalez recently sent out a letter to the parents of seniors at Santa Rosa High School, informing them that the district is working hard to come up with alternative dates for a commencement ceremony should it not be able to be held on May 29 as originally planned.
“At this time, we are considering alternate dates for the ceremony, however, these dates will be contingent on the information we receive about COVID-19,” Gonzalez stated in the letter. “The circumstances that we are in are unprecedented and we have no way of providing you with specific details. We ask that you understand that the safety of our students, staff and community are of the utmost importance as well make every attempt to provide our Class of 2020 students with their well-deserved graduation ceremony.”
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott officially announced that the 2019-20 school year would not be allowed to continue during a news conference on April 17. Prior to the governor’s announcement, some school districts in the Valley had hoped to resume classes in early May.
So far, only a handful of districts have announced graduation contingency plans. Earlier this month, Los Fresnos CISD was one of the first to announce that it was looking to reschedule its graduation ceremony to three alternative dates should it not be able to go on as planned on May 30. The dates included June 20, July 18 and Aug. 8.
