Senior spotlight: Timothy Rivera

When did you start playing baseball? I started playing baseball when I was 4 years old.

What position do you play? When I started out I would play second and shortstop a lot but as I got older I started playing other positions such as outfield and a lot of infield, but now my main position is first base.

What do you like most about baseball? I love the feeling and the rush of the sport, and the competitive nature, as well as playing alongside my teammates having a great time.

What is the strongest part of your game? I think my strongest part of my game would be my defense. I like to play hard and encourage my teammates while out on the field.

Do you play any other sports? No, baseball is the only sport I play.

What are you currently doing to stay active? I work on my swing in the cage as well as running drills, and defensive drills to improve footwork and ball movement.

Who is your favorite professional athlete? That’s a tough one. Either Mike Trout from the Los Angeles Angels, Alex Bregman from the Houston Astros or Christian Yelich from the Milwaukee Brewers.

What is your favorite sports team? The Houston Astros of course! H Town hold it down!

What is your favorite food? Probably pizza or chinese food.

What is your favorite movie? This one is a tough one, but I’d have to say maybe an oldie like “The Goonies,” “Back to the Future,” “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.” etc. “Star Wars” or any superhero movie.

What is your favorite book? Probably would have to be “The Outsiders.”

If you could live in any city in the world, where would that be? I really like the aesthetic of Tokyo, Japan, as well as the culture there so I would love to live there.

If you could have dinner with a famous person, past or present, who would that be? Tyler the Creator, who is a famous R&B artist and one of my favorites.

What is the best live concert you’ve ever seen? I actually have never been to one, but if i had to choose to go to one I would like to go to a rap concert.

What is something most people don’t know about you? I’m a big gamer.

What is your favorite subject in school? My favorite subject in school would probably have to be history.

Do you plan on going to college? I plan on attending UTRGV in Edinburg to continue my education.

What do you want to major in? I hope to major in criminal justice.

What would you like to do in the future? I hope to work in law enforcement in my future.

Talk a little bit about what it’s been like having to endure this break. This break has been kind of hard trying to get used to online work as well as not seeing family a lot and also not being able to work and provide for my family has been a tough time. We are staying positive and staying safe during this hard time.

Now that the entire season has been cancelled, how does that make you feel? Sad, to be honest. I’m gonna miss playing high school baseball with my teammates. We’ve played with each other since tee ball and shared an unbreakable bond with each other since then.

Have you learned anything from having to deal with this unprecedented experience? Just trying to stay positive and help out with what I can by social distancing and to not take things for granted.
