LA FERIA – Last year at this time, there was no coronavirus outbreak preventing or shaping the way City Commission meetings were run.
Last year, there was no coronavirus outbreak stopping the annual July 4th celebration at Veterans Memorial Sports Complex.
How times have changed.
The latest from the city of La Feria is that the City Commission has decided to cancel all Independence Day activities due to COVID-19 concerns, as told in an email from City Secretary Amanda Morales.
However, regular, in-person City Commission meetings have resumed, although board members and attendees are wearing face masks and keeping social distancing in mind. During its most recent meeting on June 9, the City Commission had on its agenda the consideration and possible action to extend the declaration of local disaster pertaining to public health as a result of public health issues arising from the coronavirus.
This year was supposed to be the 14th annual Independence Day celebration at the sports complex, which hosts a variety of food vendors, barbeque cookoffs, photo booths, live music and, in some years, a basketball tournament as well as the fan-favorite fireworks display.
The cancellation comes as the number of positive COVID-19 cases in the Valley and state are spiking within the last week.
For now, however, city meetings will continue to be held, although city hall is still closed to the general public. City Commission meetings are held on the second and fourth Tuesday of every month at the City Commission room at La Feria City Hall on 115 E. Commercial Ave.
