Conjunto festival cancelled due to COVID-19

The highly anticipated Conjunto Festival held in Los Fresnos will not take place this month so fans of this musical genre will have to wait until 2021 – all things considered.

That festival, which has been going on here for the last two years, was forced to be cancelled because of the pandemic.

The event has been held with the participation of some 20 conjunto bands from all over the Lone Star State and has attracted hundreds of people, some of whom came from as far as Chicago and Los Angeles.

The cancellation was announced during a past meeting of the Los Fresnos City Council.

Rogelio Nuñez, spokesman with the Narciso Martinez Cultural Arts Center and the festival organizer, said the festival was a success the two years it was held in mid October.

However, the health crisis going on today has impacted just every major event not only in the Rio Grande Valley but all over the country.

Many of this region’s main events such as Brownsville’s Charro Days, the Jazz Festival, fishing tournaments along the gulf coast, concerts and parades throughout the Valley have either been cancelled or postponed until next year.

The Los Fresnos Rodeo, the city’s biggest event of the year held the last weekend of February, is facing the same fate and its board of directors will meet next month to announce whether to have it or not in 2021.

Nuñez said he posted the cancellation of the Conjunto Festival on Facebook and hopes people are aware of the changes.

“We will wait until 2021 to see what happens,” he said, “so stay tuned.”
The Conjunto Festival was relocated to Los Fresnos from its previous home base in San Benito where it was there for 25 years.
