Senior posts third-fastest all-conditions 100-meter dash time in high school history

HARLINGEN — In 2019, the Harlingen High sophomore Jose Garcia had his first chance to shine at the 6A state track meet, as he lined for the 100-meter dash next to Houston Strake Jesuit’s Matthew Boling, who had just posted the fastest all-conditions 100-meter dash time in American high school history.
Unfortunately for Garcia, a minor injury setback prior to the race did not allow him to be at his best and the Cardinal star finished last with 10.75 seconds, while Boling placed first with a meet record of 10.13.
The COVID-19 pandemic would force Garcia to wait two years before returning to the state meet last month, but it would be worth it as he blazed down the Mike A. Myers track to capture gold in the 100-meter dash with a wind-aided time of 10.00, a new all-conditions state record and the third-fastest in American high school athletics.
Garcia’s official time was 9.998 (+5.1) all-conditions time ranks behind Boling’s 9.98 (+4.2) set back at the Region III-6A meet and Gibbs High School’s (Fla.) Trayvon Bromell, who recorded a 9.99 (+4.0) in 2013.
