After a rough beginning 2023, Mexico was able to find the light at the end of the tunnel. That light happened to be golden as Mexico brought home some hardware to add to their legacy.
Mexico defeated Runner up Panama 1-0 to capture their 9th CONCACAF Gold Cup title, their first since 2019.
After getting through Costa Rica 1-0 then Jamaica 3-0. Mexico was ready to take on Panama, who did some damage themselves. Coming off two big wins in the knockout stage, Panama defeated Qatar 4-0, then blindsided the US in 5-4 victory in a penalty shootout.
Championship Sunday saw Mexico and Panama meet in a sold out SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, California.
Both teams battled it out and Mexico was able to mount up a strong offense. Early in the match, Henry Martin scored a goal that was negated due to an offside position. While Mexico had more shots on goal, Panama was able to keep up and gave Mexico a few scares throughout the night.
88 minutes into the game, Santiago Gimenez took a deep pass and battled multiple defenders and was able break away enough to kick one through the net, scoring Mexico’s first goal of the night.
Mexico withstood the final two minutes and held on to win 1-0 over Panama.
