A Successful BBQ Cook-Off for La Feria Early College High School

On Thursday, October 26th, The La Feria Early College High School hosted its first-ever Barbecue Cook-Off. The event took place at the Lion’s Stadium parking lot. Several High School teams from Region One participated in this first-time event.
For many of the students participating, it was their first time ever cooking for this type of event. There was a total of 15 schools with some schools having more than one team. The food categories they participated in were tacos, wings, beans, ribs, and steak.
The participants were from the La Feria FFA, La Feria Culinary, Monte Alto, Harlingen South, South Texas ISD World Scholars, South Texas ISD Medical Professionals, San Benito ISD, Edcouch Elsa (3 teams), La Villa and La Joya ISD. Teams started arriving by 7:30 a.m. to start prepping for the BBQ event. Even though the rain dampened the start of the morning, everyone was able to get set up with their canopies and got to work firing up their BBQ pits for the cook-off event.
All participants were kept busy from the time they arrived, putting their love for cooking on display. Once a dish was ready for judging, the students would take the dish into the gym where the food was being judged by some members of the school board and community.
The La Feria News spoke with Robert Salazar from the La Feria FFA who mentioned that “this was a first-time event, but we hope to keep it going with more schools participating from Region One in the coming years.” Mr. Salazar was very proud of both the La Feria FFA and Culinary team for their hard work and dedication to the art of BBQ. The La Feria News would like to Thank Mr. Robert Salazar for the invite for the first, but not last BBQ cook-off for the La Feria Early College High School.
