Three STISD High Schools Earn Spots On 2023 AP School Honor Roll
- Updated: December 31, 2023
MERCEDES, TX – College Board recently published its 2023 AP® School Honor Roll, and all three STISD high schools offering Advanced Placement (AP) courses made the list, including South Texas ISD Health Professions (Health Professions) in Mercedes, South Texas ISD Medical Professions (Medical Professions) in Olmito, and South Texas ISD Science Academy (Science Academy) in Mercedes.
The AP® School Honor Roll recognizes schools whose AP programs are delivering results for students while broadening access. Schools can earn this recognition annually based on criteria that reflect a commitment to increasing college-going culture, providing opportunities for students to earn college credit, and maximizing college readiness.
There are four levels of distinction: Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum. Schools can earn an additional Access award if the percentage of AP Exam takers who are underrepresented minority and/or lowincome students mirrors the school’s overall student demographics.
Health Professions in Mercedes earned the Gold level distinction and the AP Access Award, Medical Professions in Olmito earned the Platinum level distinction and the AP Access Award, and the Science Academy in Mercedes earned the Platinum level distinction.
According to College Board, 4,570 schools—which represent 30 percent of eligible high schools—are being recognized for their work creating AP programs that are delivering results for students while broadening access.
- 886 schools (6 percent of eligible schools) received Platinum level AP School Honor Roll recognition.
- 914 schools (6 percent of eligible schools) received Gold level AP School Honor Roll recognition.
- 1,430 schools (9 percent of eligible schools) received Silver level AP School Honor Roll recognition.
- 1,340 schools (9 percent of eligible schools) received Bronze level AP School Honor Roll recognition.
Of these 4,570 schools, 1,770 (39 percent of Honor Roll recipients) also received the AP Access award, demonstrating a clear and effective commitment to equitable access to advanced coursework.
Trevor Packer, Senior Vice President AP & Instruction shares, “AP represents an opportunity for students to challenge themselves, earn college credit and placement, and potentially boost their grade point averages. These schools have shown that they can expand access to these college-level courses and still drive high performance — they represent the best of our AP program.”
