Lions and Hawks Clash

By Ruben Rodriguez
La Feria News
Riding a wave of momentum stemming from a three game win streak, The La Feria Lions have been rolling in the 2024 Texas High School Football Season. In Week five, the Lions clashed against former district rival Zapata. Since 2014, the Lions have dominated the rivalry, winning seven of their last ten matchups, including a five game winning streak from 2018 to 2022. Last season, Zapata dominated the matchup, winning 31-7.
The Lions and Hawks both exploded right out the gate. La Feria and Zapata both knocked in three touchdowns to make it a 21-21 ball game at the end of the first quarter. The offense slowed down a bit for both teams in the second quarter as the Hawks were able to knock in a touchdown to take a 28-21 lead at the half.
It has been noted that when a game is high offense in the first half, it becomes a defensive game in the second half. That once again proved to be the case, as defense led to a scoreless third quarter. The Fourth quarter, still mainly a defensive game, saw some action on offense as both teams were able to knock in a touchdown. Despite a late touchdown, the Hawks were able to win 35-28.
La Feria falls to 3-2 on the season. The Lions will have one more non-district matchup against Brownsville St. Joseph before opening up district action against Grulla.
