La Feria Fire Department is getting a new firefighting truck to cope with such emergency situations.

The city commission recently approved buying a fire truck as recommended by Fire Chief David Phinney

The ”urban vehicle” will cost $240,000 and it will be partially funded by the increase in emergency services fees the city approved early this year.

The U.S. Forest Service will provide a grant of $45,000 and the city will finance $195,000 over a 10-year period.
Phinney said the truck has a capacity to store 250 gallons of water, has a high pressure pump and it’s as contemporary as it can be.

He said the vehicle has relatively few miles and will have insurance coverage for two years.

Phinney said the insurance will take effect from the day the city gets the truck.

City Councilwoman Esmeralda Lozano made a motion to purchase the truck and it was unanimously approved by the council.

La Feria is about to have its own fire department as the city council has approved hiring four firefighters thanks to a grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Phinney said he still is working on the project to staff the new department in addition to the volunteer firefighters.
