Making ropes using an antique piece of equipment has been a hobby for Bernie Schroder.

The Winter Texan visitor from the Midwest said he learned the skill from his grandfather and started making ropes as he belongs to a group of craft people called Rio Grande Equipment Club out of Mercedes.

“This particular piece of equipment is more than one hundred years old,” he said, pointing toward one end of the rope making device. “I built the wooden base and other things.”

Schroder said the way he makes a rope is basically the same principle as it’s done these days, although the type of equipment is not.

He said his ropes are pretty tough and come in a variety of colors.

Schroder was one of the many people who participated in the Fiesta de la Feria and his group will be at the upcoming Rio Grande Livestock Show to be held March 7 through 17 in Mercedes.
