As 2019 nears its end, the economic outlook for the City of La Feria looks bright for 2020.

A new franchise is coming after the city council approved a request at its last meeting to rezone a piece of property along North Main Street next to Church’s Chicken.

The lot, which belongs to Pizza Hut, was rezoned from industrial designation to commercial.

That will pave the way for Dollar Tree to build a store there.

The Chesapeake, Virginia-based company is a Fortune 500 enterprise that operates nearly 15,000 stores in the U.S. and in Canada.

Here in the Rio Grande Valley, the company has nearly two dozen of the discount stores known for their $1 or less items on sale.

Although having a Dollar Tree store here is in its early stage, the plan was revealed during the council meeting by a representative of the Pizza Hut franchise.

The business outlook here has had its ups and down, but it remains optimistic.

The city received a sales tax check from the state comptroller’s office of $146,334 for November, compared to $152,857 for the same month a year before – a decrease of 4.25 percent.

But in the year-to-date figures, La Feria has received $1,352.364, compared to $1,296.625 for the same period in 2018 – an increase of 4.29 percent.
