Grant Enables LFPD to Buy New Vehicles

by Tony Vindell/LFN

The La Feria Police Department has recently acquired two new vehicles with money allocated from Operation Stonegarden.

The program is an initiative of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security that provides grants to local, state and tribal law enforcement agencies to assist in border security efforts.

LFPD received a grant for $110,000 and the money went to buy two brand new Chevrolet Tahoes.

Police Chief Cesar Diaz said they have been applying for the grant for the last three years.

“We have been applying for the grant every year but, apparently, we did not qualify,” he said. “We finally got it this year.”

Diaz said his officers have been working overtime assisting in border security using city vehicles.

“That puts a lot wear and tear on these vehicles,” he said. “We now have these two additional patrol units.”
