Senior spotlight: Lydia Alvarado

When did you start playing golf?
I started playing golf my 7th-grade year when coach (David) Briones started a junior high golf team.

What do you like most about golf?
What I like most is being able to practice and play with my friends; it makes you a better player.

Do you play any other sports?
This year I really focused on golf, so I let go of the other sports I played.

What’s the strongest part of your game?
The strongest part of my game is my mind game and I work really well with my irons.

What part of your game needs improvement?
The part of my game that needs improvement is my short game for sure, but it’s really all mental.

What’s the best round you’ve ever shot?
The best round of golf I shot was a 99.

What are you currently doing to stay active?
To stay active, I workout with my dad throughout the week so I can still stay in shape.

What is your favorite food?
My favorite food is definitely some good wings.

What is your favorite color?
My favorite color is green.

What is your favorite animal?
My favorite animals are dogs, for sure.

If you could live in any city in the world, where would that be?
If I can live in a different city, it would be San Francisco.

What is something most people don’t know about you?
Something most people don’t know about me is that I work hard to get where I’m at.

Do you plan on going to college?
I plan on going to UTRGV for college this fall semester.

What do you want to major in?
I plan to major in biology.

What would you like to do in the future?
I would like to be a physical therapist.

Talk a little bit about what it’s been like having to endure this break.
This break has definitely been pretty hard, not being able to go back to school and have our daily routines. But it has been a big eye opener and it gives you the time to focus on yourself and where you want to be.

Now that the entire season was cancelled, how does that make you feel?
I’m definitely sad about it. It was my last season and the girls and I were planning on going back to regionals again this year. I don’t think any of us thought that our last tournament would be our last time playing for our high school career.

Have you learned anything from having to deal with this unprecedented experience?
I’ve learned that you can’t take anything for granted because at any time it can be taken away from you. It’s important to appreciate and enjoy everything you do and really give it your all.
