Independence Day Celebration
- Updated: July 1, 2022
La Feria, Texas —The City will be holding an Independence Day celebration on Saturday, July 2 starting at 3 pm at Veterans Sports Park. There will be live music food vendors, prizes, and a cook-off. Everyone is welcome to bring their lawn chairs and tents. Ice chests are also allowed for this event. A great time for family fun.
The live music will be by Del Castillo, a band self-proclaimed as “one of the best Latin bands ever”. The band will be there from 3 pm to 9 pm on Saturday, July 2.
Admission is free, and according to the City of La Feria flyer, there will be a fireworks show as well this year.
A backyard cook-off will also be taking place. Each team will have a $200 entry fee for cooking the Fajitas, Brisket, Chicken, and Pork Spare Ribs. For Pan de Campo, Beans, and Baked goods the entry fee is $25 per person.
Coordinator and head judge, Charles Villanueva says the main categories are Fajitas, Chicken, Pork spare Ribs, and Brisket.
Each category will pay a grand total of $1,000 divided into 1st place winner who receives – $500, 2nd place, receiving $300, and 3rd place, receiving $200.
Villanueva says “Then you have jackpot categories, which pay 100% of entry fees only to 1st place, so, for instance, the bean category… if there are 5 entries at $25.00 each entry then the prize for that category is $125.00 for 1st place.”
Judging on Saturday will begin as follows:
8:00 a.m. Head Cooks Meeting
10:00 a.m. Baked Goods (Cobbler or brownie)
11:00 a.m. Beans (Dry Pinto Beans Cooked on Site)
12:00 p.m. Fajitas (Traditional, No Sirloin Fajitas)
