La Feria City Commission Elects to Grant Land to Affordable Housing

city_of_la_feria_logo-300x300The La Feria City Commission held its last regular meeting Tuesday, April 9th. Items on the agenda included a report by TxDOT on the status of several projects, including the sidewalk improvement project.

Progress on the project was reported as on schedule, although concerns were raised by the TxDOT representative concerning the slope of certain driveways around town being too steep and needing to be corrected, which would mean a small rise in cost from what was originally estimated. The representative and city staff assured the commission that enough funds were in the project’s fund to cover any additional costs that might be incurred.

John Guevara, city tax lawyer for La Feria, then presented the city commission with a bid that had been made for an acre of land that had been struck off to Cameron County from a tax resale conducted on November 6, 2012. The bid was approved, giving the city a property that will return to the tax roll and net the city a sum of $517 from the sale. The buyer intends to use the acreage for affordable housing.

The city also approved an ordinance annexing certain land owned by the city which would extend the boundaries and extra-territorial jurisdiction of the city.

Another item approved during the meeting was an ordinance establishing guidelines for participation with public/private non-profit entities for affordable housing and economic development. This ordinance laid the groundwork for the approval of the next agenda item – a resolution for the sale of 10 residential lots to South Texas Collaborative for Housing Development originally purchased by the city through the Neighborhood Stabilization Program.
The resolution was adopted and the commission entered executive (closed) session.

The next regular meeting of the La Feria City Commission is scheduled for Tuesday, April 23.
