The Adrian Dominguez Scholarship 5K Road Race and 1 Mile Walk has been an iconic local event for 17 years, and this year proved to be just as successful. The previous success of the annual foot race through La Feria has led to the return of the 5K and 1 Mile walk challenge. The event was held on Saturday, March 30 at the Veteran Memorial Park Sports Complex, and 125 runners and 45 volunteers participated.

The overall male and female winners were Manny Gonzalez, age 17, from Mercedes, TX with a time of 17:14 and Teresa Sora, age 17, from Edinburg, TX with a time of 21.04. All participants received race day shirts. Medals were awarded to the first three places in each of the 7 age categories for both male and female runners and walkers. Additionally, juice, fruit and bottled drinks were graciously provided by race sponsors.

Jesse Robles, 1st place, 30-39 age group, has participated in the event for 10 years. Jesse is a founding member of RuNsane Running. He invites anyone who is interested in running to follow RuNsane Running on Facebook and join the team.

Net proceeds from the race go to providing scholarships for students from La Feria High School. The impetus of the scholarship was the passing of Adrian Dominguez who attended La Feria High School. With the involvement of the community members, the scholarship has grown from a private one to a community effort. To date, 54 students have received scholarships totaling over $19,800. Not only is this a great thing for the winner of the scholarships, but it is also a great experience for the runners.

The event organizers would like to thank Jaime Casas, Pancho, Rosa, and Mari Cobarrubias, John Hernandez Jr., Tavo Rubio, Robert Rubio, Lori Weaver, Angelica Baldivia, Joe and Gloria Loya, Linda Rodriguez, and Mayor Steve Brewer, and the volunteer students from La Feria ISD for their help in coordinating and directing the event. Additionally, the Foundation would like to thank the City of La Feria and Sunny K. Philip, the City Manager for their cooperation and use of city owned facilities. A special thanks goes to Chief of Police Don Garcia and the La Feria Police Department for the escort of the racers. Added appreciation goes to Law Offices of Alejandro Dominguez, John Ftacek, Law Offices of Guz Ruiz, Mr. and Mrs. Alfonso Guillen, Borden Products, Big Red/7 UP, J. C. Wings, and Gaviota Sand Pit and Materials for their continuing support and generous sponsorship. Next year, the 18th Annual 5K Road Race and 1 Mile Walk will be held on the Saturday before Easter.
