Deadline for Superintendent Applications May 28

La Feria School Board Trustees approved a long list of qualifications and characteristics they would like to see in their next superintendent. The action was taken at the last meeting of the board held Thursday, May 9.

The board approved a document noting their preferences for the position and ideas gathered from community involvement sessions. It states that the superintendent, as chief executive officer (CEO), is accountable to the Board of Trustees, which expects the CEO to be the education leader of La Feria ISD. The CEO works closely with the Board of Trustees to develop and implement policies and programs designed to carry out the district’s mission.

In concert with the staff, students, and the community, the Board of Trustees has identified certain characteristics and qualifications as highly desirable in a CEO:

  • A strong, experienced, and visionary administrator who can provide direction to the district through a collaborative planning process
  • Confident leader with a proven record of building successful teams and improving academic performance
  • Has experience in a growing district with similar demographics and is comfortable with the culture of a developing rural community that is predominately Hispanic (La Feria ISD has approximately 3700 students, 97% Hispanic)
  • Able to work in partnership with a Board of Trustees and build a climate of candor, mutual trust, and cooperation
  • An experienced financial manager who understands how to maximize the district’s resources and tap alternative sources oaf funding
  • Person of integrity with high moral standards and personal ethics
  • A superior communicator with refined interpersonal skills who is visible, willing to listen and learn, and interacts well with the staff and community
  • Committed to La Feria ISD for the long term and actively involved in the district and community
  • Has thorough background in curriculum at all levels and experienced with Cscope.

With the departure of former Superintendent Nabor Cortez, Jr. at the end of last semester, Robert Rivera has been sitting in as interim Superintendent for the district. He has chosen not to apply for the top job, but will be staying on with La Feria as Assistant Superintendent on a year to year basis.

Deadline for applications for the job as LFISD Superintendent is Tuesday, May 28 at midnight. Applications are taken online through the TASB Executive Search Services.

The board will review the applications on Monday, June 3 and begin a series of interviews and arrangement a site visit to the district on Tuesday, July 2. The one finalist will be named on Wednesday, July 3 and if he or she accepts the position, the board will vote to hire on Thursday, July 25.

The next board meeting was moved to Monday, June 17.
