City to Call Special Election for Mayor
- Updated: November 15, 2013
Mayor Brewer effectively resigns as he announces as a candidate for Cameron County Commissioner Pct. 4 in Democratic Primary Election

Mayor Steve Brewer speaks to members of the La Feria City Commission and residents at a workshop held during a special meeting held Monday, November 7 at the Tex-Mex Restaurant in La Feria.
The City of La Feria will need to call a special election to seat a new Mayor after current Mayor Steve Brewer announced that he will be running for the office of Cameron County Commissioner Pct. 4 in the May Democratic Primary Election. La Feria native Dan Sanchez holds the post and is expected to run for re-election.
“Mayor Brewer has the option to continue presiding as mayor until the position is filled and the city must call a special election within 120 days of his announcement,” explained City Manager Sunny K. Phillip.
Elections Officer Olga Oberwetter said upon approval by the commission, a special election would most likely be called for some time in January. Mayor Pro-Tem Lori Weaver and Commissioner Victor Gonzalez, Jr. have both indicated their desire to run for the post.
Mayor Pro-Tem Weaver, and Commissioners Gonzalez and Angelica Baldivia are also up for re-election in the regular May election for their respective posts, Place 3,4 & 5. Deadline for filing for the regular election will be February 25 of next year.
Brewer has served approximately six months of his third term as Mayor of La Feria. He was elected in 2007 to the office which has three-year terms.
