The “Unselfie” Introduced for 2nd Annual Giving Tuesday

Texas Diaper Bank Among Local Groups Taking Part
by John Michaelson
AUSTIN, Texas – With Black Friday and Cyber Monday now in the books, people around the state and nation are being asked to think of others on this Giving Tuesday.
Henry Timms, the event’s co-founder, says that can include donating money or time to a favorite charitable group. And a new spin this year is having folks post what he calls an unselfie on social media.
“Share a picture of you doing something useful for others,” he explains. “Share a picture of a cause that matters deeply to you. Do something unselfish around Giving Tuesday.”
Among the nonprofit organizations statewide taking part in Giving Tuesday is the Texas Diaper Bank, which, according to administrative assistant Emily Bodden, serves around 40,000 low-income people each year.
“And we assist them with emergency diapers, wipes, baby food, formula, pull-ups, under pads, as well as senior under pads and diapers,” she says.
Since its first event last year, Giving Tuesday has grown to include more than 8,000 partners in all 50 states.
To help promote Texas Diaper Bank’s mission on this Giving Tuesday, Bodden says the group is sharing a video featuring dozens of students from the University of Texas at San Antonio.
“We had 42 different students come in and repackage diapers, wipes and make food bags,” she says. “So they did a video to promote volunteering for our organization as well as donating.”
