LIONS SECURE PLAYOFF SPOT FOR THIRD YEAR WITH WIN OVER HIDALGO
Photos by David & Veronica Briones
The La Feria Lions scored early and often as they dismantled the Hidalgo Pirates 48 – 6 to move their overall record to 6 – 1 and 2 – 0 in district.
The Pirates threatened early as they recovered an onside kick on the opening kickoff. Hidalgo drove the ball deep into lion territory until defensive back Ozzie Cisneros intercepted an attempted pass in the end zone to stop the pirate drive. The lion offense would take over from their as quarterback Isaac Galpin hit a wide open Angel Carrera on a long touchdown pass to give the Lions the early lead. The scoring continued as the Lions went into halftime with a 41 – 0 lead. The lion defense played tough throughout the game stopping the Pirates time after time and forcing them to punt. The lion offense controlled the clock the second half by consistently pounding the pirate defense with their running game.
Overall, the Lions played a great game and have clinched a playoff spot for the third year in a row. They will now face the Kingsville Brahmas and Zapata Hawks to finish district play. A win versus the Brahmas could assure the Lions at least a share of the District Championship. Good luck to the Lions on the rest of the season, we are very proud of you.
