Lions Tame Gators at District Opener
- Updated: October 24, 2014
The La Feria Lions football team defeated the Grulla Gators last Friday night to improve their overall record to 5 – 1 and more importantly their district record to 1 – 0. The Lions came out of the gates firing on all cylinders. They were exceptional in all three phases of the game. The Lion defense got things started when defensive back Jaime Garcia intercepted a ball by the Grulla quarterback. Moments later, Lion quarterback Isaac Galpin hit Freshmen wide receiver Julian Trevino on a long touchdown pass to give the Lions an early lead. The Lion defense was tough all night versus the visiting gators. They forced a defensive safety, returned an interception for a touchdown (Russ Gonzalez), and later returned a punt return for a touchdown (Angel Carrera) all in the first half. The Lions went into halftime with a comfortable lead but Grulla came out on fire in the second half scoring seventeen unanswered points to cut the lead to 28 – 17 in the third quarter. The Lions weathered the storm and later scored another touchdown to pull away from the threatening gators to gain a 36 – 17 win at Lion Stadium. The Lions will now travel to Hidalgo to face the Pirates and then return home to La Feria to face the Kingsville Brahmas. With only three remaining games left in district and for the season, every game is crucial. We would like to congratulate the Lions on their victory and continue wishing them the best of luck as the season continues.
