Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia M. Burwell announced the $36.3 million in Affordable Care Act funding to 1,113 health centers in recognition of their achievements in ongoing quality improvement activities. Su Clinica, based in Harlingen, Texas, was awarded a total of $115,411 for being a proven leader in areas such as chronic disease management, preventive care and clinical quality improvement. Su Clinica was one of only two health centers in Texas and 57 nationwide to achieve recognition as a national quality leader. National Quality Leaders are recognized for exceeding national clinical benchmarks for chronic disease management, preventive care, and perinatal/prenatal care, demonstrating the critical role that health centers play in promoting higher quality care.

“This funding rewards health centers that have a proven record in clinical quality improvement, which translates to better patient care” said Secretary Burwell.

Su Clinica, CEO, Elena Marin, M.D., was honored by the announcement. “Su Clinica has been serving Cameron and Willacy County residents for over 40 years and its mission has not changed,” she stated. “Improving the health and well-being of this community is our top priority. Our focus on quality and commitment to excellence has been imbedded into our culture, is definitely a team sport, and without our consistent effort to improve systems of care through our compassionate and dedicated staff, we not be able to perform successfully.”

Dr. Marin also expressed pride in the achievement and the recognition it brings to the region. “It is always a pleasant surprise when we find out how well we are performing against our peers which include over 1,000 health centers across the country. Being recognized by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services as a National Quality Leader, in the top 5% of all centers in the country is amazing. I am so proud of our organization, our board of directors, and the positive recognition this brings to the Rio Grande Valley,” she added.
