LA FERIA CLAIMS FIRST DISTRICT TITLE IN 16 YEARS
La Feria Lions Beat Zapata Hawks 26 – 22
The La Feria Lions claimed their first District Championship in over 16 years by defeating the Zapata Hawks 26 – 22 last Friday night at Lion Stadium. The Lions started off fast by jumping out to a 20 – 6 lead going into halftime. Zapata returned the second half with an offensive surge to bring the score to 20 – 14. The Hawks fought valiantly to overcome the Lion’s assault, but it proved to be La Feria’s year when the Lion offense drove downfield late in the fourth quarter and scored on touchdown pass to pull ahead for good. The late touchdown not only sealed the win versus Zapata, but it also game the La Feria Lions the outright District Title and the number one seed going into the playoffs. As the clock ticked down, second by second, the Lion players as well as the Lion faithful waited in anticipation for the clock to hit triple zeros. When it finally did and the horn when off to signal the end of the game, the crowd erupted with cheers. Coaches were seeing running crazy hugging their beloved players, fans were screaming with excitement, Lion nation was back. The District Championship had returned to its rightful owner in Lion Country. It was a night of celebration for the La Feria program, it’s fans, it’s children, and more importantly it’s community.
