Returning for its 20th year, the Adrian Dominguez Scholarship Race/Walk/Dash is scheduled for this Saturday, March 26th, at the Veteran Memorial Park Sports Complex located on Pancho Maples Drive in La Feria.

All registered participants at the event will receive a commemorative race t-shirt as well as juice, soft drinks or bottled water. Prizes will be raffled off the day of the race. Medals will be awarded to the top female/male 5K run and 1 Mile walk participants in all age categories.

Trophies will be awarded to the top male and female runners and a trophy for the school with the most runners. There is a category for everyone, regardless of age, from 13 and under to 70+.

Net proceeds from the race will fund scholarships for students from La Feria High School.

The race was first established in 1996 by local residents Manuel and Olga Dominguez in honor of their son, Adrian, who had spina bifida.

Adrian passed away in December of 1994, at the time he was a senior at La Feria High School. The passing of Adrian Dominguez motivated his siblings to fund a scholarship for graduates of La Feria High School. At the urging of La Feria ISD school board member Gloria Casas, she advocated for community involvement in fund raising for the scholarship.

The Dominguez brothers and sisters proposed having a 5K road race and 1 mile fun walk. With the help of La Feria City Manager Sunny K. Philip, the Adrian Dominguez Memorial 5K/1 Mile Walk and the City of La Feria have enjoyed a continuous 20 year cooperative relationship to make this a successful event.

It is now the longest-established five kilometer race in the Rio Grande Valley.

The event benefits the Los Diez Education Foundation, which awards scholarships to area students; so far, more than 54 students have received a collective total of more than $20,000 to pursue higher education.
