Presentation on OLLU PHD Program at Latest Chamber Meeting
- Updated: May 12, 2017
by Victor Moreno/LFN
At the La Feria Area Chamber of Commerce monthly meeting, those in attendance were treated to a very informative presentation by Our Lady of the Lake University Business Professor, Dr. Marco Garza.
Dr. Garza began his presentation with some background information about his personal experiences. Coming from a family of business owners and side business owners the direction of his journey was set.
Dr. Garza attended A&M University at Kingsville after high school and pursued a Masters degree from Pan American University in Edinburg.
His sights were set on a PhD, however there was no PhD program available south of San Antonio to El Paso in those days. Dr. Garza approached A&M about a cohort program which became the first PhD program of it’s kind at that time.
“Fast forward to today” said Dr. Garza “the OLLU PhD program is a big deal for students who might otherwise not be able to get a PhD program”. OLLU is located right here in La Feria! “If any community should be proud, it’s this one, for what you have in OLLU” Dr. Garza continued. Our Lady of the Lake in La Feria located at 505 N. Villarreal is the same University located at San Antonio but provides a local and cost effective option for Rio Grande Valley residents. OLLU also offers tuition discounts for residents of the 78559 zip code. OLLU currently has military veterans and students ages ranging from early 20’s to late 50’s pursuing Masters and PhD programs.
