The La Feria Lions finished off their final preseason scrimmage just as they had hoped by defeating the Brownsville Lopez Lobos 41 – 34 Thursday, August 24th, afternoon at Lion Stadium.
The game was originally scheduled at 7:00 p.m. but because of the bad weather expected in the forecast because of Hurricane Harvey the game was pushed to an early 3:45 p.m. start. The Lions knew coming in that Lopez was gonna be a tough opponent and that they would be a very physical team on both sides of the ball.
The Lobos jumped out to a 14 – 7 lead early in the game, but the Lions were determined to give their home town fans a better showing during the two live portions of the game, and they did not disappoint. Both offenses were on a roll and continued scoring one touchdown after another.
With the score close, lion quarterback Dorian Hernandez hit wide receiver Julian Trevino on a 9 yard touchdown pass to put the Lions up 35 -28. The Lobos would not settle as they marched down field and scored another touchdown to make the score 35 – 34 in favor of the Lions.
With only a few minutes left in the game, Brownsville Lopez decided to go for a 2 point conversion to try to win the game, but failed as the lion defense deflected the ball on an attempted pass to hold on to the one point lead.
At just under a minute left in the game the Lobos had one more chance to try to score, but defensive back Justin Martinez picked off a throw from the Lopez quarterback and ran it in for a touchdown to seal the game for the Lions.
The Lions 41 – 34 win over the 5A Brownsville Lopez Lopez helped them get the confidence and the momentum they needed heading into their first regular season opponent Raymondville on Friday, September 1st at Raymondville. Good luck to the Lions and Roll Pride!
