The students at Sam Houston Elementary School got a real lesson in civics last month and learned how government business is handled because Judge Mike Trejo conducted the installation of the 2017-2018 Student Council.

The program is very popular with the kids and has been a feature of the school for eleven years. Principal Maria Rodriguez explained that the student council teaches leadership, citizenship and responsibility, along with a heightened school spirit emphasizing team work. She explained to the student body how significant their role was in the voting process and in electing the new officers along with classroom representatives.

At Sam Houston Elementary School, the program begins in the first grade and continues through the fourth grade. The elected officers on the council are chosen from third and fourth graders.

Rodriguez said, “It’s their council and their meeting, The teachers just supervise and recommend, assist, explain, and guide the elected officers. The students themselves choose the projects for each month.”

She added that she is honored to work with the officers and members of the 2017 Sam Houston Elementary Student Council. The officers are: Danielle Perez, President; Presley Becerra, Vice President; Amber Gutierrez, Treasurer; Diego Navarro, Secretary.

Judge Mike Trejo was chosen to induct the 2017-2018 Student Council officers and Representatives during the installation ceremony of the Student Council again this year. The judge said, “I am truly honored to participate in the swearing-in ceremony of the Student Council.”

During the ceremony, Judge Trejo stressed the value of a good education to the fourth-grade students. “He said, “I congratulate all of you on your accomplishments. They will play a very important role in your future,” adding, “Learn to lead by example and be a role model for the other students. Respect your teachers and encourage the other students to do the same.” Once inducted, the students received a Student Council medal, and the parents of the student council officers were invited for refreshments.

The principal said the kids were excited to have a judge talk to them and install the newly elected Student Council officers. The parents appreciated that judge Mike Trejo would take time to officiate at the induction ceremony.
