La Feria Veterans Committee Gives Overview

A monument, a flag pole and engraved pavers are some of the projects the local Veteran’s Memorial Committee is doing here to honor those who have served or still are serving their country.

On Tuesday, April 10, committee members went before La Feria City Commission and gave an outlook of what they have been doing as well as some of the future projects they have in mind.

A monument to honor Veterans has been erected off Main Street but other things need to be completed such as placing engraved pavers near the monument.

Lori Weaver, a volunteer with the committee, said they wanted to inform commissioners about the things they have been doing in the city.

Ed Conelas, another volunteer, told commissioners they have some unfinished projects and asked for financial support.

He said they have raised $4,250 for the monument project and the money will be used to buy and install four benches and 58 engraved pavers.

Conelas said they anticipate the project to cost $21,200, adding they need help from the city to accomplish their goal.

The committee would also like the city to name the park as La Feria Veterans Memorial Monument Park. Other proposed names are Freedom or Valor Manor parks.

In other business, the council approved a request to close certain city streets for Saturday’s April 14 Our Lady of the Lake University 5K Run and Walk.

The 3.1-mile run and walk is the school’s first annual event to raise scholarship money.

Dr. Patricia Blanco, the campus’ director, said the 5k was held simultaneously with the university’s flagship campus in San Antonio.

“This is our first annual 5K here,” she said. “This is not a race as there are no first, second or third place awards given out.”

In other business, the council heard a presentation from Fire Chief David Phinney regarding the department’s fire truck and vehicle fleets.
