Lions Off to Hot Start

LA FERIA – Everyone knows the old saying,” defense wins championships.” With that said, the Lions defense has only allowed 13 points to start the season.
The La Feria Lions varsity football team is off to a 3-0 start after defeating the Mercedes Tigers 28-0 at Tiger Stadium on Sept. 14th.
The last victory the Lions earned a win against Mercedes was in a rain-out game in 2013 that ended in a 12-0 forfeit.
A couple of the Lions’ victories come from two of the biggest rivalry games of the season against Santa Rosa and Mercedes. The reason behind the Lion’s success is in part due to their high-flying offense and stone-wall defense, which includes two pick-6s.
On the offensive end, junior quarterback Dorian Hernandez has distributed the ball well, and when the Lions move the ball using the ground game, there isn’t much of a difference. Sophomore tailback Avishai Dickerson had his breakout game in the Battle-of-506 rushing for two touchdowns.
The Lions wrap up non-district facing Port Isabel and renewing their rivalry with the Rio Hondo Bobcats. It’ll be the first time the Bobcats and Lions face each other since the 2014 realignments. Then, the Lions jump straight into district against Kingsville King on October 12th followed by Zapata, La Grulla, and Hidalgo.
