Cameron County’s newest facility for concerts, for viewing rockets blasting off from nearby Boca Chica Beach, for school events, weddings and festivals is now open for business at Isla Blanca Park.

County and South Padre Island officials met on Saturday, Oct. 5, to inaugurate the $2.1 million amphitheater in the Dolphin Cove area at Isla Blanca Park.

The outdoor facility was built with funds from the county’s hotel- motel venue and rental vehicle taxes.

County Judge Eddie Treviño Jr. said they were celebrating the culmination of one of the best looking parks along the Texas gulf coast.

”It took us a little while to get here,” he said, “but we are now celebrating the completion of this wonderful events center.”

The 41,100-foot amphitheater has a capacity to seat 4,200 spectators, including 800 reserved stone shade seating.

Precinct 1 Commissioner Sophia Benavides said Dolphin Cove was destroyed by Hurricane Dolly in July 2008 and having the new amphitheater is going to make the Island more attractive for its many visitors.

Patrick McNulty, the Island’s new mayor, said he would like to thank the commissioners’ court for investing into the future by bringing such a wonderful facility to the Island.

Precinct 4 Commissioner Gus Ruiz described the Cameron County Amphitheater as a quality of life project for the benefit of all county residents.

On Saturday, the amphitheater was scheduled to hold its first concert by having a concert by Sublime with Rome.
