Texas Gov. Greg Abbott issued an executive order that temporarily closed schools amid COVID-19 concerns.
Abbott said in a recent news conference that education should continue online or through other methods. At the news conference it was asked if school would open before the end of May. Texas Education Commissioner Mike Morath said the state needs to wait and see how the virus spreads ahead of the order’s April 3 expiration before determining whether a longer closure is necessary.
Since Gov. Greg Abbott announced the temporary closure of all Texas Schools, on Saturday, March 21 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., parents from La Feria ISD were instructed to pick up instructional packets at their students’ home campuses. At the time only pre-K through 8th grade packets were distributed. High school students will be receiving their instruction online through Google classroom and Edgenuity.
Also, starting on Monday, March 23-27, the schools distributed both breakfast and lunch to students at La Feria High School, Dominguez Elementary, Hickory Hill Subdivision and Adam’s Garden. It was drive-thru service so parents didn’t have to get out of their vehicles. Students did have to be in the car to receive the meal, however.
Meals are distributed to any child up to the age of 18. The following Monday, the students also received all five meals for that week. La Feria ISD will continue to let the community know of any new updates through their social media pages or through their text messaging service.
