Lionettes Capture District Title with win over Port Isabel

La Feria- The La Feria Lionettes took on the Port Isabel Lady Tarpons in another round of District 32-4A play. The second and final meeting between the Lionettes and Lady Tarpons, La Feria beat Port Isabel 56-54 on January 13 in the first meeting.
The First Quarter saw Kaya Dickerson tack on seven points to lead the Lionettes’ offense. Alongside Dickerson was Alessandra Torres and Reandra Castillo, who both put up four points a piece to lead Port Isabel 19-9.
The Second Quarter saw Port Isabel, who at one point trailed 22-9, pull off a large comeback led by Layni Mata who netted in 10 points in the quarter. Emily Burroge followed with four points in the quarter to keep Port Isabel in the fight. Despite being outscored at the end of the half, La Feria still led Port Isabel 28-23.
Mariah Pattan and Alessandra Torres sparked the Lionettes’ offense in the third. Both combined for seven points. La Feria’s offense would continue to dominate in the fourth quarter, as Dickerson, Gonzalez and Pattan combined for 14 points to propel the Lionettes to a 56-40 win over the Lady Tarpons.
The 32-4A Finale, La Feria’s Victory signified the Lionettes capturing the District Title in District 32-4A.
“It was a wild win for us”, said Lionettes Head Coach Delia Lopez. “We had to come out with everything we can and try to keep them back for the win”.
Coach Lopez also spoke on how crucial this win was for the Lionettes. “This was it, This was the win we needed to be district champions”, said Lopez
La Feria took control early on in the first quarter, and was quickly closed out by Port Isabel in the second. Coach Lopez broke it down on how they were able to maintain control. “We had to minimize our turnovers. They were scoring on our turnovers”, said Lopez. “We needed to make better decisions on the court and get our minds right”.
La Feria finishes off 32-4A Play with a 7-2 record. The Lionettes will take on Tuloso-Midway in the Bi-District Round of the UIL Class 4A Region Four Playoffs.
