The 2023 WAC Baseball Tournament is underway, and the UTRGV Vaqueros began their journey towards a Conference Championship.
Finishing as the 7th seed with a conference record or 15-14, Derek Matlock’s Ball Club had a series of wins to set as a wave of momentum heading into Tournament Week.
In the opening match, UTRGV was slated off against the UT Arlington Mavericks, the 6th seed of the Conference. Despite being seeded lower, UTRGV played key offense and defense as the Vaqueros got the bats hot at the right time.
After UTA knocked in two runs in the bottom of the first, the game turned into a test of defenses for two complete innings.
The Vaqueros however got the ball rolling in the top of the fourth inning, scoring in six runs to take a 6-2 lead. The Vaqueros continued the dominance from the plate, knocking in eight more runs across the next three innings. Meanwhile, UTA only managed to score in two more runs before the Vaqueros would win 14-4 in seven innings.
UTRGV Moves on to the second round of the WAC Tournament, where they will face off against Rival Grand Canyon University.
