The RGVLS Holds a Successful Show on Their 85th Anniversary

For many years, the Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show has been a cherished tradition for families in the Valley, offering a wide range of exciting activities and attractions. From school-aged kids showing off their livestock to families coming together to enjoy the colorful parade and peruse exhibits, ride thrilling carnival rides, sample delicious food, and be entertained by the exciting rodeo performances, there’s always something for everyone to enjoy.

Some school districts even schedule their spring break around the show’s week-long event so they can attend and make the most of the fun-filled experience. This year is the 85th Anniversary of the RGVLS. The show kicked off with opening day on Thursday, March 7th, and the official kickoff took place on Saturday, March 9th, with the much-anticipated parade down Texas Avenue and onto the RGVLS showgrounds.

The Concert Headliners began on Friday, March 7th, featuring The Ranch Road Band and a fantastic lineup of talented performers, including The Doo Wah Riders, Marcos Arozco, the Spazzmatics, Neil McCoy, William Beckmann, a tribute to Taylor Swift, Gary P. Nunn, a tribute to George Strait by Derek Spence, Ram Herrera, and Horsemen Jam closing out the week on Sunday, March 14th.

The rodeos are a major attraction at the Livestock Show, starting with the Ranch Rodeo and PRCA Xtreme Bull Riding. The PRCA Slack Men’s events included tie-down roping, steer wrestling, and team roping, while the PRCA Slack Women’s Events featured barrel racing and breakaway roping. The PRCA Rodeo also featured Mutton Bustin’, Fan Cam, and Intermission Entertainment.

There was plenty to see and do this year, including new attractions like the Sea Lion Splash, an exciting show that both kids and adults enjoyed. You could even take your photo with the sea lions; pictures were available for purchase. Animal Crackers Stilt Walkers also added to the fun. Visitors could enjoy browsing the variety of vendors at the Exhibit Hall, savoring some of the best food around, from pizza to tacos and burgers, and indulging in all the carnival or fair food you could imagine. And who could forget the fun carnival rides and games available to enjoy?

According to the Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show website, the show’s first edition was organized in 1940 by the Mercedes Chamber of Commerce. It was held on the grounds of a local livestock sales yard with makeshift pens and lean-to sheds. In 1949, the show moved to its present location at 1000 North Texas in Mercedes and has continued to grow and expand ever since.

Today, the show features permanent buildings on over 100 acres and ranks as one of the top ten shows in the State. It attracts people from all over Texas to enjoy the many activities, including a parade, rodeos, competitive livestock events, and a vast array of attractions scheduled daily. The show is made possible thanks to the tireless dedication of countless volunteers from all walks of life, who give endless hours to make the show successful and support FFA and 4-H exhibitors.

El RGVLS realiza un show exitoso en su 85 aniversario

Durante muchos años, la Exposición Ganadera del Valle del Río Grande ha sido una tradición muy apreciada por las familias del Valle, ya que ofrece una amplia gama de actividades y atracciones emocionantes.
