Groundbreaking Ceremony Held for New Airport Tower

Valley International Airport, located in Harlingen, Texas, is currently undergoing a significant development project that will enhance its operational capabilities. As part of this project, a new air traffic control tower is being constructed, which is expected to cost $20 million and be completed by 2025. The groundbreaking ceremony for the tower was held last week, marking an important milestone in the airport’s development.

The new air traffic control tower will play a crucial role in ensuring the safety and efficiency of the airspace around Valley International Airport. It will be equipped with the latest technology and infrastructure, allowing air traffic controllers to better monitor and manage the flow of aircraft in and out of the airport. This, in turn, will improve the airport’s operational capacity, making it a more attractive option for airlines and travelers.

The tower will also be an important symbol of the airport’s commitment to growth and development. By investing in new infrastructure and technology, Valley International Airport is positioning itself as a key commerce and travel hub in the region. Valley International Airport is the largest airport in the Rio Grande Valley, serving nearly 700,000 passengers and visitors. Formerly known as the Harlingen Air Force Base, the airport was shut down in 1962 following President John F. Kennedy’s decision to close 70 air bases in the United States. The military airfield was then given to the city of Harlingen to be converted for civil use as an airport.

Despite being closed as an active military airfield, Valley International Airport still accommodates about 50% of traffic consisting of military aircraft. The U.S. Navy and U.S. Air Force in central and southern Texas frequently use the airport, which also includes training aircraft.

In 1968, the Commemorative Air Force (CAF), which was located in Mercedes, Texas at the time, relocated to Valley International Airport and leased three former USAF buildings, including 26,000 square feet (about the area of a large mansion) of museum space.

The CAF is a non-profit organization in America that was established in 1961 to preserve and restore historic military combat planes from World War II. These planes are maintained in operating condition and are employed for aerial demonstrations, historic education, and air shows. However, by 1990, the CAF had outgrown its Harlingen facility, and there was no room to expand its operation. In 2015, the CAF Museum, its headquarters, and its aircraft museum were moved to their current home in Dallas, Texas.
