La Feria ISD Educates Students on the Importance of Farm Fresh Meals

By Mike Villarreal

The La Feria ISD Child Nutrition Program is enthusiastic about its commitment to incorporating more locally sourced food throughout the district’s meal offerings. In October, they proudly showcased a variety of delicious options, including supreme pizza from Alpha Foods, known for its quality ingredients and appealing flavors. Alongside this, the program highlighted a vibrant array of fresh, seasonal produce featuring Texas-grown grapefruit from Nicho Produce, which is flavorful and supports local farmers and the community.

The milk served in the district’s schools is sourced from Oak Farms Dairy in Texas, ensuring that students enjoy fresh and nutritious dairy products. Recently, students had the opportunity to sample a limited edition of Orange Cream milk. Additionally, this year’s menu has excitingly introduced strawberry milk, providing a tasty option children love while promoting healthy eating habits. Oak Farms Dairy has served Texas and West Louisiana for over a century. Since 1908, they have been delivering local dairy goodness that can be counted on for flavor and freshness from day one.

During the Texas Department of Agriculture’s Farm Fresh Challenge, students were educated about the significance of using local products and enjoying fresh, nutritious meals. This initiative not only demonstrates the program’s dedication to improving the nutritional quality of school meals but also its commitment to educating students about healthy eating and supporting local agriculture.
