C.E. Vail Elementary ACE students Learn about Gardening
- Updated: December 20, 2024

By Mike Villareal
The C.E. Vail ACE Garden and Nature Club has initiated a new vegetable garden. This semester, students have been learning about various nature topics, including hummingbird migration, the birds of the Rio Grande Valley, and beneficial insects.
They have also studied plants’ basic needs, which has helped them grasp the fundamentals of starting a vegetable garden. In collaboration with Mr. Juan Hernandez from Behavioral Health Solutions of South Texas, the students have designed a garden with raised garden beds.
The garden beds are now prepared for fall and winter crops suitable for the South Texas climate, such as broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, carrots, cabbage, lettuce, herbs, radishes, and peppers. Students will enjoy creating recipes using the vegetables they have grown, gaining skills that will enable them to cultivate their own vegetable gardens and understand the concept of food sustainability.
Starting a garden offers numerous benefits, including teaching responsibility, fostering patience, encouraging physical activity, promoting healthy eating habits, enhancing environmental awareness, and providing a hands-on learning experience across various subjects like math and science. It can also improve mood and reduce stress.
Club participants range from first to fourth grade and are led by Mr. J. Gonzalez and Miss S. Salazar.
