The La Feria Basketball Programs found themselves having another busy weekend as both the Lions and Lionettes were competing in Basketball Tournaments. Both teams have been spectacular all throughout Non-District Play and look to continue that trend.
The Lions took part in the annual Hidalgo Pirate Classic. The undefeated Lions aimed to continue their winning momentum in a tournament setting.
To open up tournament play, the Lions took on Harvest Christian Academy. The Lions took control from the start and held on to win 54-36. However things did not go as planned as the Lions found themselves at the losing end of three consecutive games. La Feria would fall short against Rio Grande City 49-44, Los Fresnos 52-44, and Weslaco East 47-44.
Despite losing three straight, the Lions battled every single matchup, losing by no more than six points. The losses would be the Lions’ first losses of the season after a perfect first month of action.
Meanwhile, the Lionettes had tournament action themselves. Two games was all the Lionettes had and they did make the most of it. La Feria opened up their tournament against Edinburg North. In a repeat of their last matchup, the Lionettes were once again victorious, taking the win 61-26. The Lionettes then faced off against two time TAPPS 2A State Champion Harvest Christian Academy. In a back and forth battle, the Lionettes would fall short due to a late push by the Lady Eagles, who went on to win 57-51.
Despite not so good results, both Lions and Lionettes still have the spark to get back on track and plenty of time to readjust their offense and defense. Both teams will return to non-district play and continue on until 32-4A Play opens up in January 2025.
