Xavier Solis, a dedicated native of La Feria, Texas, officially took office as Kenosha County’s new District Attorney on January 3rd in a ceremonial event held in Kenosha County. At the age of 46, he has made history as the first Mexican-American to secure a county-wide office in Kenosha County. Additionally, Solis holds the distinction of being the first Republican District Attorney in nearly a century, as the last Republican to occupy this role did so in 1924—marking a significant milestone of 100 years in the county’s political landscape.
The swearing-in ceremony took place in the prestigious ceremonial courtroom, a setting that underscored the significance of the occasion. All eight Kenosha County Circuit Court judges attended the event, showcasing the respect and recognition for Solis’s achievement. Among the attendees were his family members, including his father, a fellow La Feria native who has since relocated to Kenosha, and his mother and aunt, who currently reside in Texas. Their presence highlighted the strong familial support that has been a cornerstone of Solis’s journey.
In his heartfelt remarks, Solis reflected on his upbringing as the son of migrant farm workers on both sides of his family, illustrating the deep-seated values of hard work and resilience instilled in him from an early age. He recounted stories about his father, who begins his workday at 5 a.m., often calling Solis by 8 a.m. to check on him with humor, asking, “I’ve already been working for three hours. Why aren’t you out there working?” This playful banter not only showcases their close relationship but also emphasizes the strong work ethic that Solis has inherited. He acknowledged, “I can never work like that, so I will always thank my dad for his example.”
Solis also paid tribute to his aunt who dedicated three decades to teaching and played a pivotal role in raising him. He became visibly emotional while sharing her inspiring work ethic as she skillfully juggled a full-time teaching job with night classes. “She set that example for me of what hard work can accomplish, as well as the importance of a good education,” Solis remarked, expressing pride in her accomplishments. Her perseverance paid off when she graduated with her bachelor’s degree, leaving a lasting impression on Solis during his turbulent teenage years when he was not the easiest child to raise. “I was probably one of the worst teenagers ever,” he admitted, underscoring his family’s challenges.
Transitioning from La Feria to Kenosha during his teenage years was a significant change for Solis, one that he initially resisted. However, with time, he grew to appreciate his mother’s decision to make that move, recognizing its impact on his personal growth and stability. Eventually, his mother returned to Texas, but Solis chose to remain in Kenosha, where he built a fulfilling life for himself and his children, embracing the community that welcomed him.
Solis proudly noted that he was the first individual in his immediate family to attend college and law school. He earned his accounting degree from the University of Wisconsin-Parkside while balancing part-time work and raising three children. His determination led him to pursue and obtain his Juris Doctor from the University of Illinois-Chicago Law School while maintaining full-time employment.
He reflected on his journey, “I believe I achieved the American Dream.” His story is a testament to what is achievable when opportunities converge with unwavering determination, embodying the values that make this country great. Throughout his career as a defense attorney, Solis has remained committed to fighting for justice, gaining invaluable insights into the significance of family, fairness, accountability, and the rule of law—all of which will guide him as he embarks on his new role as District Attorney.
