Students Participate in Marine Biology Camp

By Mike Villarreal

The W.B. Green Jr. High Gifted and Talented (GT) students recently had the opportunity to immerse themselves in a hands-on Marine Biology Camp organized by the College 1st Program. This program is designed to promote the significance of post-secondary education, generate awareness of various STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) career pathways, and equip students with essential 21st-century skills that are crucial for success in today’s world.

Throughout the Marine Biology Camp, students engaged in a variety of enriching activities. They participated in thoughtful discussions that encouraged critical thinking, conducted hands-on experiments that allowed them to explore marine ecosystems, and presented their findings on specific tasks they completed during the camp. These experiences not only enhanced their knowledge of marine biology but also nurtured collaboration and communication skills.

The College 1st Program, based in Mission, Texas, is dedicated to providing students with comprehensive college readiness and career exploration experiences. Their mission is to empower all students in the Rio Grande Valley and across Texas to feel confident in their ability to enroll in and successfully complete a post-secondary education, ultimately allowing them to pursue meaningful careers in rapidly growing fields.

To achieve this goal, College 1st organizes a range of career exploration camps, including those focused on STEM, business, and the arts, tailored to Pre-K through 12th-grade students. These camps take place throughout the academic year and during the summer, utilizing project-based learning approaches that promote academic enrichment. Participants benefit from valuable college and career connections, along with mentorship experiences that help them navigate their future paths.
