Grant Consultant Says City on Right Path to Better Things

by Tony Vindell/LFN

The City of La Feria is on right path of economic development and infrastructure projects, a consultant told the city council during its last meeting.

Humberto Garza, director of business development and government affairs with Sam Engineering & Surveying (SAMES), said his company is working on two grant proposals to seek state and federal funds for construction and infrastructure projects.

The money sought, around $2 million, will be invested in Phase Two of Our Lake of the Lake University, he said.

“We have two great opportunities at the state and federal levels,” he said. “We definitely have a lot of things going. The partnership the city has with Our Lady of the Lake is great. We believe this university will become a major destination for people seeking higher education (degrees).”

Isauro Trevino, grant writer with SAMES, said the city should try to grab these grants to cover for construction and infrastructure projects, but emphasized that that time is of the essence when it comes to applying because of stringent deadlines.

Garza and Trevino said they gave the council an update of what they are doing now and will come back at another meeting to get the councils “blessing” before taking the next step.

In other action, they heard a presentation from Gladys Villarreal of Exceptional Emergency Care about the services they provide.

She said the free standing emergency company is not affiliated with any hospital, opens 24/7 and does not accept Medicaid or Medicare patients.
