PORT ISABEL – La Feria’s Lionettes had faced tough competition coming into the annual Volley On The Beach Tournament and looked to make some noise.

The Lionettes dropped their pool play games to Corpus Christi Carroll and Los Fresnos but found their rhythm against Monte Alto, giving them a 1-2 record and sneaking in as the seventh seed in the Gold Bracket.

The Lady Falcons from Los Fresnos headlined the opening day and continued their dominance and put a two-game sweep on the Lionettes, sending La Feria to the consolation bracket.

Things turned around for the Lionettes as they won in straight sets over Santa Rosa and gaining a spot in the consolation championship.

The Weslaco East Wildcats was the team standing in the way of the Lionettes’ run for glory.

After winning the first set, the Lionettes were in sole position of taking a two-game sweep, but the Wildcats went on a 5-0 run to make it 23-21 with the Lionettes inches away from winning the match.

Coach Fraga called a timeout and told her team to get the job done, which resulted in the Lionettes putting away the match and clinching the Gold Bracket Consolation Championship.

Fraga was impressed with her team’s performance and growth in the tournament and talks how they’ll use this opportunity to improve and get ready for district.

“It’s very exciting. We played a tough tournament last weekend, so it was nice to get some wins under our column. Hopefully our transition back our normal district schools helps boost our confidence having seen so many different speeds and styles of play so far. Overall, it was great to finish on a positive note, and I’m very proud of our girls.”

Before district play begins, the Lionettes upcoming schedule consists of 3 bigger schools as well as their final tournament appearance at the Hidalgo Varisty Tournament from August 23-25.
