Anyone wanting to try some of the best dishes fixed on both sides of the Texas-Mexico border will have a chance later this month at the Taste de la Frontera food extravaganza in Brownsville.
The annual event, which is celebrating its 31st anniversary, will allow people to taste dishes prepared by cooks from about 30 restaurants from the Brownsville/Matamoros area.
Mariachi bands, music and folkloric dancers will provide some of the entertainment at the festivity being held on Jan. 21, which is Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Arturo Trevino, president of Mr. Amigo Association, said the Taste de la Frontera is an event held to raise funds for their non-profit organization that promotes good will between the two countries.
The Taste de la Frontera will begin at 6 p.m. on that Monday at the Brownsville Events Center.
The participating restaurants include some of the best known eateries from both sides of the Rio Grande.
Previous businesses include Antonio’s Mexican Village, Bigo’s, EL Piquin, Chicken Run, Mr. Taco, Rudy’s Country Store & BBQ, Cobblehead’s, New York Deli, Chick-fil-a, Vermillion. Lotus Cafe and many others.
The variety of restaurants and a $25 ticket to taste the many dishes has made the fiesta a sold out event year after year.
Tickets for the Taste de la Frontera are available at the Mr. Amigo Facebook site and an at a number of businesses in Brownville such as Mi Pueblito Restaurant, Los Trevis Drive-Thru, El Ultimo Taco and at the Brownsville Travel Center.
